The newly elected Southern Region Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Committee (SRWBC) has promised to introduce mini-tournaments to popularise the power-lifting sports and attract more athletes.

This is the first time for the region to have a committee which was ushered into office last weekend at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).

“The mini-tournaments are meant to wipe off the misconceptions that people have regarding the nature of our beloved sports. We want people to understand that weightlifting and bodybuilding are not the breeding grounds for troublemakers and thugs,” said SRWBC chairperson Vincent Donda.

“Next Sunday, we will conduct a meeting at the BYC to strategise on how to go about it and most importantly, how to approach the corporate world for support.”

During the elections last weekend, Blessings Kachere was voted in as Donda’s deputy while Kondwani Saleta, Gift Sinyangwe and Collins Kalima were elected treasurer, general secretary and vice-general secretary respectively.

Ephraim Matekesa, Clement Kamanga (not the former footballer), Isaac Saleta, Tiziona Chilewani and the only female Bianca Lipato were ushered in as committee members.

Mr. Malawi Bodybuilding Championships’ third-placed winner Yasin ‘Ichocho’ Suwedi said he is hopeful that the coming in of the regional committee will change things for the better.
